Cairo – The Inter-Arab parliamentary Union (IAPU) renewed on Thursday its full support for the efforts made by Morocco to retrieve northern Moroccan cities of Ceuta and Melilla and Chafarinas islands.
In a press release issued by the end of its 16th conference convened in Cairo, the IAPU called on Madrid to engage direct talks with Rabat to reach a peaceful solution to the issue and respond to the offer made by late King Hassan II.
The IAPU statement also recalled the proposal made for setting a Moroccan-Spanish commission to jointly ponder on a fair and peaceful settlement of the Moroccan cities still under Spanish control in order to restore Morocco’s legitimate rights.
AIPU is an Arab parliamentary organization composed of parliamentary groups representing Arab Parliaments. It was born in the wake of the October war of 1974 to enhance Arab solidarity, Arab joint actions and cooperation.
The Constituent Conference of the Arab IPU was held in Damascus June 1974.
